Croatia is “across the street” rather the Adriatic Sea, from Venice…it’s “around the corner” from Rome and “just up the road” from Turkey. All these places governed what we know as Croatia today which makes for a country that is firmly identified with itself as it has evolved from the multi-cultural influences of the centuries before. This small country boasts ten UNESCO World Heritage Sites. From ruins dating to the Romans and Ottomans to cathedrals centering the lovely towns like Šibenek and the 2,000 islands that bejewel the the coastline it’s a lovely place to visit. My occasion was a trip with SwimQuest, an outfit in the UK that organizes amazing adventures for those of us who like being wet. My Merpod from Santa Fe invited me. Thank you ladies! Prior to the swim we visited Plitvice Lakes National Park and then Šibenik which I loved. On to Split location of Diocletian’s retirement palace, a mild understatement. From there the lively waterfront ferries can take you on more adventures, for us a jaunt to Hvar a charming island and lively water vibe. From there to the Pakleni islands via water taxi and finding rest at the magical Palmižana Art Hotel. What can be said about the great guides and international group of 12 (including two English Channel crossers) who bonded in and out of the water. Amazing two swims a day in coves and along coastlines – all swimming levels welcome with challenges for all. Memorable. A great way to celebrate 70.
